music, thoughts, books, dreams, more

Just my world of dreams, music and thoughts. Author of two books, one a novel of Love stories set in Framingham, Mass, Secrets of the Heart the 2nd book an autobiography of growing up in Framingham, Mass. Small Town America, Framingham My generation was the first teenage generation, that was when the word was coined. Ours was the generation that started cruising through town and to the drive in theater and drive in restaurant. In our area, Ernie Kampersal, from Holliston, drove his bucking car through town, picking up girls. It rose in the air, like a stallion! We went to the soda shops and played the juke boxes. It was a different town, a different time, and it belonged to us!

Alvin and the chipmunks - Frosty the snowman

Here is that great group, Alvin and the chipmunks, who had us all singing in those long ago days

Spike Jones- All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth

Spike Jones, how could we forget him?  This song  hit the air waves around  the end of the 2nd World War!  We were in a happy crazy mood as a country and loved this !  Alvin and the chipmunks came out with their version too!

Los Indios Tabajaras (playlist)

My favorite sign off song, will try and be back tomorrow, with more music and thoughts of sounds and voices....enjoy one of my favorites with this...Adios!

Harry James - Trumpet Blues & Cantabile

Harry James, probably the most famous trumpet player of his time.  He has lots of music available, you can  listen, and learn from his style.

Baby Its Cold Outside - Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban + Betty Ga...

A peek at 1949, when I thought I might be the new Esther Williams, ha ha, what a dream!  She went on to marry Ricardo Montalban.

I'll Be With You In Apple Blossom Time (1940) - The Andrews Sisters

You can imagine how popular this song was during the 2nd World War, it played on our radio many times, as Mom and I sang along.
Many of my contemporarys can remember this song and it reminds them that their Mom's were young once and loved music, as did my Mom.

Top 40 Hits Of 1941 31 Charlie Barnet I Hear A Rhapsody

The war was creeping up, people were suffering in Europe, we where trying to stay out of the war, but, it was only a matter of time Dad said,  " Mark my words, we will be in this war!"   A song of longing was to become so important to the young men that were drafted, and quickly sent off to foreign shores...leaving behind the sound of the horn, that followed them in their minds,  trailing a melody and a memory of their loved ones,as they crossed the ocean on troop ships.  The ocean  liners where conscripted and put into the service for transporting our men.

Jingle Bell Rock - Brian Setzer

One of my favorites by Brian...can you imagine coming to my home with this music playing , the beautiful lights ablaze, the smell of cider, sweets , and pine...oh! Those were the days!  Treasure them...

Brian Setzer - Dig That Crazy Santa Claus - Live!

Refreshing seasonal jump and jive music...

Stray Cats - Race With the Devil

Here is a little bit of music and a little bit of cars and motorcycles....he has a little sound of Elvis, do you think?

Citizen Soldier: A Life of Harry S. Truman: Aida Donald: 9780465031207: Amazon.com: Books

Citizen Soldier: A Life of Harry S. Truman: Aida Donald: 9780465031207: Amazon.com: BooksI was watching book TV, just the other night, when I heard the author speak of her book on Truman.  I plan to order it for my Kindle.  Truman and Dewey ran a close race, Dad was a Republican, and voted for Dewey, he went to bed the night of the election saying that the election was over, Dewey had won!  Everyone thought so that night, but in the morning, when we got our morning paper...In those days it was The Boston American,    we heard Dad yell!  Truman won!....no one could believe it...but it was confirmed on the radio and in The Framingham News, our hugh 3 foot wide paper that came in the late afternoon.  It was a different town, a different time and it belonged to us!

DRAG RACING WHEN IT WAS FUN!

Chop cars, drag racing, and more all started after the War, our generation had cars!  We rode in cars with no floor boards in the back seat.  Doors  did not open, they had no air conditioning, some of them smelled from age and cigarettes, etc...but......WE HAD CARS!

The Inkspots - We'll meet again.

My Aunts must have sung this song, as they waited for their husbands to come home.  At our little table, Sundays we had our aunts join us for dinner.   Dad was 4 F, which meant he could not go to war, so he was an air raid warden for the neighborhood.  "When the air raid warning comes on... can I come with you, Dad?" It was not to happen, my job was to pull down the shades, and shut off the lights, til the air raid warning was over.  Dad would put on his white helmet and take his white billy club, to patrol the neighborhood, making sure the lights were out and everyone was safe!

Vera Lynn - Auf Wiedersehn

We were at war with Germany, but this song we shared with our enemies....a song of such longing for those who lost their boyfriends and husbands, as they went off to war.  Women too, went to war, but they where not drafted, they volunteered and flew the supply planes across the Atlantic.  Women went to work!  Wow! women could go to work, I was amazed, at how the world was changing.    Our car factories switched to making tanks.  Our women turned out amazing numbers of B 52 bombers each week!

Vera Lynn - When The Lights Go On Again.

Oh, how we filled with hope when we heard this song play on our radio's back in Framingham, Mass, in the early 1940's.  Mom and I would sing this song, and tears come to me now, as I think of those days when we  hoped and prayed our uncles would come home from the war alive and well.  Some of them were wounded, but they all came home!  How lucky we where!  Not all families saw their loved ones come home!

Michael Bublé - "Me & Mrs. Jones" Live at Madison Square Garden

Comon!  This is the gift for music lovers, an album by Michael...my grandson was correct in giving me one last year!  Don't forget to check out his albums for gifts..

Michael Bublé - "I've Got The World On A String" Live at Madison Square ...

Love this arrangment, love the intro very 1940's sounding, then it goes into some great horn sounds...superb!  Michael Buble you will live forever, just as the great singers of the past!

Ella Fitzgerald - Always

Ella had a secret weapon, her voice was an instrument all by itself!  Just listen to her .

Somewhere , somehow, a number of us realize that there is more to life, than meets the eye.  It comes in a sudden burst of awareness, or it might be at the death of a loved one.  When you meet this realization, you want to know more about it, because down deep you realize  we are all on a repeating journey to learn love.  We go in different directions with different twists and turns, but the ultimate goal is to learn that love is all there is.  Some of us figure it out and want to continue on the journey with Love foremost in our minds as we navigate, we stumble, we fall   There is always the hope if you hold it close that you will be able to end your life with that one goal, that one crumb of understanding,  LOVE is all there is.
A book like this will open your senses to the place of Love in the world.  I have enjoyed his past books and intend to enjoy this one.

Small Town America Framingham Thru My Eyes: The War Years and Beyond: Madlyn A Fafard: 9781466201026: Amazon.com: Books

My plan in writing this book, was to paint a broad stroke picture of the time.  Heavy immigration brought thousands to our shores at the turn of the Century, just before the 1st World War.  We were influenced by the times that came before us and by the desire of immigrants to make a better life for their children.  When the 2nd World War came bearing down, we became a land of heroes.  I don't know about you, but I thought we lived in a land of HEROES!
I believe that those of us who lived the period of time that enveloped the world in war, always have tears inside when the war is recalled.  Yes, look carefully at the faces , at the eyes of those remaining people of the time , you will see, when the war is recalled, the pain hidden just under the surface.
Virtual reality was our constant companion as we shouted terms we heard on the radio..."Yamamoto!
Axis Sally! Hari Kari!   We played make believe war games on our side streets and fields off Hollis Street in Framingham, Mass., a small town at the time, maybe like the small town you grew up in.
At night tears followed us to bed, in our roller shade bedrooms with flowered wallpaper and lace curtains, as the songs of the time drifted down the hall and under our bedroom doors, while air raid practice caused all the lights to go out.   A song of tears for me, When the Lights Go On Again All Over the World, was like a prayer!

Totch: A Life in the Everglades: Loren G. Brown: 9780813012285: Amazon.com: Books

A book that  I received on a Florida antique car tour.  It sat unread for a few years.   I decided to put it in the car, and read it whenever I was waiting for my husband to do his many errands and talk fests. Surprise!  I even took to telling my husband the escapades of Totch, the fisherman and alligator poacher!  He loved the storytelling.  Here is a flavor of the book.

The family so poor that they had no way to survive the depression moved into the Everglades and lived off the land, first in a lean- to shelter. Here is a man who could survive in primitive conditions who raised a family through tough times, and became a HERO in the second world war,  This was the America I knew as a child, at least I thought our country was a land of HERO'S, but then I was a child during the most terrible war our  world had known.  Surviving hardship was what I thought we could do. We were created by  the survivors of the old world who came here for a better life and they knew how to do it.    If you like to read about how people survived in tough times.  Totch's episodes with Little Eddie the game warden remind me of Jackie Gleason the Sheriff chasing Burth Reynolds, in the famous movie about the speeding driver ...what was that movie, do you remember the name , Sally Fiedls was in it too!  I will try and find it..and post it here.  Maybe Totch would make a good movie, because it is adventurous.  Totch has a heart attach while poaching alligators in the swamp, his baby daughter is trapped in a fire sitting on the engine of his fishing boat.  His love for his wife, his Queen, the mother of his children, is evident as he risks his life to support his family.

Imagine what it was like to be a child during the time of this war, that raged on for over 4 years. Our men, my uncles among them, left to fight in a distant war. We never knew if we would see them again.Songs were tearful, hopeful, and expectant. Sacrifices were made so troops could get what they needed first. The daily life we lived held them in our hearts and in our efforts to conserve and produce so they could come home. What a magnificent spirit seemed to grasp our country, and the souls that walked the town I lived in. At the end of the war we all jumped for joy, and in my home our Italian born Dad played on his accordion...

The word teenagers was born, we got cars!  Drive-in's came into being as did soda shops, and drive up restaurants.  It was the time of  the duck tail hair do, pegged pants, pegged skirts, bobby socks and the most wonderful music...our town was just a microcosm of all the small towns in America at the time.

JOHN LEGEND Live (Adele's Rolling in the Deep) 8/9/11

This appeals to me, reminds me of the Bible Singers.

Dedicated To You - Sonny Knight

Can you see how the arrangement suits his voice?  Can you imagine Nat King Cole singing it this way...??  Maybe Natalie could have done it this way???

Natalie Cole - Love Letters

what makes someone stand out.  Here is an example of story telling with effect, whether it is telling a story, or singing a song, the difference is making it personal...the way you present the story counts, and how the story matches your inner voice.

The Black Obelisk: Erich Maria Remarque: 9781931541909: Amazon.com: Books

This book was wonderful to teach us the tragedy of war, and what happens when people don't have jobs and money collapses in value etc.  This is what makes me think that maybe , just maybe the plan is to destroy the economics of the world, destroy jobs and bring the world to its knees....who and why?  The questions are out there, is it possible?  Am I the only one thinking this way?  But then what do I know?

Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians - That Old Feeling (1937)

When you heard this sound on the radio, you knew instantly it was Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians.  Everyone took in New Years's eve with Guy Lombardo...I thought that he was the only one to play on that evening, in the long ago.

Louis Hayes & Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band - Stars Fell on Alabama-Ch...

We loved the sound of the Sax and now you know why, here it talks to you.

Stars Fell on Alabama

Armstrong & Fitzgerald - "Stars Fell On Alabama"

Louis sounds a little hesitant...Ellas is cool calm and collected....then he warms up....

STARS FELL ON ALABAMA (Jack Teagarden)

He looks like a prize fighter of the past...but he was one of the well known jazz artists of his time

Vera Lynn - When The Lights Go On Again.

Could there have been a plan to destroy the economy of the world?  Why not?

Reba McEntire - The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia

Country, catchy tune, a story...can't be beat and great voice!

So This Is Love

from Cinderella...

So This Is Love- The Castells

I almost forgot about this beautiful song.  I think it could be a hit again, as so many of the old songs could be.

ED TOWNSEND- FOR YOUR LOVE

Another hummer song, something to counter the hip hop, something to close your eyes and dream on.

NAT KING COLE - LOVE LETTERS 1957

The album, Love is the Thing, if you can find it, buy it for long time enjoyment.  It never wore out, and is part of my treasured collection of wonderful songs by Nat King Cole.

nat king cole & gordon jenkins/stay as sweet as you are

Just to hear this voice and arrangment again after so many years of being stored away in my record collection, brings memories of that long ago time.  His voice was incredible, his arrangments...I would play this over and over

26 Miles Across The Sea...

I wanted to go to California to see this Island, as all the young teens did, in those days, then we had Ft Lauderdale college break, and...

Santo & Johnny / Indian Reservation

Most of us love to watch Westerns, and the best ones are the ones that include the Indian nations of our great country.  They had a wonderful civilization, one that gave birth to our Constitution, did you know that?  Look up the Mohawk nation constitution, I think they where the ones whom we copied.

Santo & Johnny - a thousand miles away.wmv

Great song to play with ..maybe a mash up with another song?

Santo & Johnny - Blue Moon (1959)

What lovely sounds..

You've Changed - Harry James & Dick Haymes [1941]

The sound of Harry James drags me back to the war years, the time of tears...for all of us that lived those days, safe in this country while our uncles, dads, and others went off to terrible battles on far away shores.

Oh! What It Seemed to Be - Dick Haymes & Helen Forrest

A song that played in our heads, and people sang, as they worked ...a song that took away the troubles of the day.

Dick Haymes - A Sinner Kissed An Angel..wmv

Sounds of the 1940's that carried into the 50's, some of the songs are forgotten, some live on, even the sounds are so different.  Do you think that people will be singing rap and hip hop in 50 years, as they do for the romantic ballads of the past.

Dick Haymes - Room Full Of Roses - A hit from the 1930s

Dick Haymes, a wonderful voice of the past and a major hit of the past...

Joni James - Love Letters Straight From Your Heart (With Lyrics)

This version is so sweet, it reminds me of my young self.

KETTY LESTER - LOVE LETTERS (STRAIGHT FROM YOUR HEART)

A major hit many years ago, and my favorite version was by Nat King Cole

LOS INDIOS TABAJARAS - LA MER

So nice, so calm , so beautiful
