The war was creeping up, people were suffering in Europe, we where trying to stay out of the war, but, it was only a matter of time Dad said,  " Mark my words, we will be in this war!"   A song of longing was to become so important to the young men that were drafted, and quickly sent off to foreign shores...leaving behind the sound of the horn, that followed them in their minds,  trailing a melody and a memory of their loved ones,as they crossed the ocean on troop ships.  The ocean  liners where conscripted and put into the service for transporting our men.

Truman: Aida Donald: 9780465031207: Amazon.com: BooksI was watching book TV, just the other night, when I heard the author speak of her book on Truman.  I plan to order it for my Kindle.  Truman and Dewey ran a close race, Dad was a Republican, and voted for Dewey, he went to bed the night of the election saying that the election was over, Dewey had won!  Everyone thought so that night, but in the morning, when we got our morning paper...In those days it was The Boston American,    we heard Dad yell!  Truman won!....no one could believe it...but it was confirmed on the radio and in The Framingham News, our hugh 3 foot wide paper that came in the late afternoon.  It was a different town, a different time and it belonged to us!

DRAG RACING WHEN IT WAS FUN!

Chop cars, drag racing, and more all started after the War, our generation had cars!  We rode in cars with no floor boards in the back seat.  Doors  did not open, they had no air conditioning, some of them smelled from age and cigarettes, etc...but......WE HAD CARS!

My Aunts must have sung this song, as they waited for their husbands to come home.  At our little table, Sundays we had our aunts join us for dinner.   Dad was 4 F, which meant he could not go to war, so he was an air raid warden for the neighborhood.  "When the air raid warning comes on... can I come with you, Dad?" It was not to happen, my job was to pull down the shades, and shut off the lights, til the air raid warning was over.  Dad would put on his white helmet and take his white billy club, to patrol the neighborhood, making sure the lights were out and everyone was safe!

We were at war with Germany, but this song we shared with our enemies....a song of such longing for those who lost their boyfriends and husbands, as they went off to war.  Women too, went to war, but they where not drafted, they volunteered and flew the supply planes across the Atlantic.  Women went to work!  Wow! women could go to work, I was amazed, at how the world was changing.    Our car factories switched to making tanks.  Our women turned out amazing numbers of B 52 bombers each week!

Oh, how we filled with hope when we heard this song play on our radio's back in Framingham, Mass, in the early 1940's.  Mom and I would sing this song, and tears come to me now, as I think of those days when we  hoped and prayed our uncles would come home from the war alive and well.  Some of them were wounded, but they all came home!  How lucky we where!  Not all families saw their loved ones come home!
