music, thoughts, books, dreams, more

Just my world of dreams, music and thoughts. Author of two books, one a novel of Love stories set in Framingham, Mass, Secrets of the Heart the 2nd book an autobiography of growing up in Framingham, Mass. Small Town America, Framingham My generation was the first teenage generation, that was when the word was coined. Ours was the generation that started cruising through town and to the drive in theater and drive in restaurant. In our area, Ernie Kampersal, from Holliston, drove his bucking car through town, picking up girls. It rose in the air, like a stallion! We went to the soda shops and played the juke boxes. It was a different town, a different time, and it belonged to us!

Rodgers and Hart "Lover" - Peggy Lee

this was a major hit and my favorite for Peggy Lee.  The violins that start the song, that appear in the background, oh, this arrangment is just spectacular!

Peggy Lee: Fever!

this was the major hit...for the song...Peggy Lee had the right sound in her voice, the arrangment called up the fever!  Fever still echoes in our music reportoire of long ago.

k.d.lang - Fever ( audio 2003 )

Interesting arrangement, different beat for a popular song...clever...sounds, and timing.

Ella Fitzgerald - Skylark

Another song that has a lasting appeal

Billie Holiday - "i´ll be seeing you"

I always think of my aunts saying good bye to their boyfriends/husbands as they went off to the horror of the 2nd World War, none of us knowing if we would ever see them again....songs were tearful, songs of longing, songs of love, as we lost years of our lives, to a war like no other in the history of our known world, ending with the dropping of two atomic bombs.

And The Angels Sing,Ziggy Elman with Tommy Dorsey

I love the Tommy Dorsey intro to this song... and then Ziggy takes it......I guess this is my favorite version..

Benny Goodman, Martha Tilton - AND THE ANGELS SING

;ooking for a great song...this is one of the best...great for instrumental or vocal

Rosemary Clooney - Baci Mi Bambino

Andrea Bocelli - Besame Mucho (2006)

this is from one of my favorite albums Under the Desert Sky...

Mario Lanza - Because

One of the great songs of its time

Mario Lanza - With a Song in My Heart - Garbo & Taylor - Astaire & Charisse

A wonderful song

Mario Lanza - Toselli's Serenade

If you listened to WKOX Framingham on Sunday, in the 1950's, I guarantee you, that you heard this song many times.

Mario Lanza - Parlami d'Amore Mariu

Here is a splendid voice of the 1950's singing the same song...what a beauty!

Parlami d'amore Mariù

If you grew up in the listening area of WKOX, Framingham, Mass., in the 1950's this was a song you would have heard on the Italian hour with Peal Oliver and her father Guido Oliver, they had the immensly popular show that was always on Sundays for those who longed to hear the beautiful music of Italy.  Pearl and or her father had to love this song, because it was played almost every Sunday, it became part of my life.

baciami piccina

Everyone knows the Rosemary Clooney version....this is a great swing version of the song...I heard anothe version yesterday that was slower and really good, trying to find it.

Billy Joel - Uptown Girl

How can we not love love this song, it is up and while it delivers an up sound, it entertains, while making you want to jump up and dance!

Barry White - Can't get enough of your love baby

what a voice, what a presentation...great music...he just belongs with the sounds of the music...

Gladys Knight & The Pips - Midnight Train to Georgia_Neither One of Us

Oh, this is such a with it song....it is crying to be heard again....

The Platters - Only You

the lead singer has an angelic voice. How beautiful !

The Duprees - Have You Heard (Live)

Songs that never die.....waiting to be heard again.

The Skyliners - Since I Don't Have You

I try not to put this up too much, because.....I love love love it.....and hope we will hear it again today...tomorrow or soon

Five Satins - In the Still of the Night

another oldies that could make it big again...

Ed Townsend - For Your Love

this was a hugh hit once upon a time, and fairy tales have happy endings, usually, so.....I hope someone will record this song again for another winner.

The Manhattan Transfer - Java Jive

A great song from the past brought back to enjoy another go around

John Coltrane - On Green Dolphin Street (Germany 1960)

One of my all time jazz favorites...

Herbie Hancock - Jazz Fusion Cantelope Island

This is a good novel, that keeps you at the edge of the chair to get to the next corner in the excitment so you can see what is going to happen next.  You will not guess who the bad guy is...don't peek!  Based on some of the discoveries we are finding in longevity, it educates as well as entertains.  Good reading!

L.A. Confidential

How Django Reinhardt survived German occupation

Interesting history of the times, I just stumbled on.

LOUIS PRIMA - King of Jump & Jive 03

Share a little of a documentary on Louis Prima and Keely Smith

Boots Randolph - Night Train.wmv

Another star version of Night Train...good listening and comparing.

Night Train - Sam Butera

I love this number, and Louis Prima version, but Sam Butera does a good job, and he had to overcome the Louis Prima version to come out with his own...good job!

Sam Butera & The Witnesses - Let The Good Times Roll (Mafia II soundtrack)

Sam Butera was with Louis Prima for years, there is some of his music around, this is a good one.

The Gaylords-Eh Cumpari (Alitalia Airlines)

Be patient, listen to the whole thing, it is a blast!

Jimmy Dorsey - "So Rare"

This is one of my all time favorites, the instrument, the arrangment, the melody....just melt with joy for the whole creation.

RICKY NELSON - SOMEDAY

a whole new feel, a young male voice, answering his girfriend...no competition with the female singers..

patsy cline someday you'll want me to love you

The voice....her voice would sound good without any background, it had something special....what a difference between the Kitty Kallen version and this....Patsy had timbre, depth, a rich full sound...

Kitty Kallen - Someday (You'll Want Me To Want You) (1961)

The third great song, that could be revived, Kitty Kallen's sound is different for this song, notice?

Kitty Kallen - If I Give My Heart To You

In a long ago life, this was a song that your Mom or grandmother might have loved, as she dreamed of her boyfriend.  Her voice is plaintif, young and trusting, just right for the song.

DON CORNELL - HOLD MY HAND (U.K.No1 1954)

Don Cornell, great voice from the past and a song never or seldom heard on the oldies lists...isn't it wonderful?

Kay Starr - Comes A-Long A-Love

A blast from the past to start your day, a song never hear amongst the oldies

Los Indios Tabajaras Adios, Begin the Begining

Signing off with one of my favorites, listen to the sweet sounds...great arrangement, and more, it is a song that makes you long for more...

Amy Winehouse - Back To Black (2006) - Full Album

Listen to the band, they are in their glory in this number, super!

Electric Light Orchestra - Out of the blue - Full album [HQ]

Now, to get to music mixing, listen to this from the 70's

Jethro Tull - Live at Madison Square Garden 1978 - Full DVD

I think it is appropriate to listen to this now, because we just heard Peter and the Wolf, see what I mean about creative....

Beatboxing Flute "Peter and the Wolf"

this is an example of being creative....I like the beatbox sound, it almost has a gypsy sound, so now its your turn to be creative!

Peter and the Wolf Part 1 (Orchestral Suite)

Creativity...seeing the movie with the music, then listening to the music after you saw the movie and thinking about what the music calls into your mind.  Are birds singing and why?

MANTOVANI - WARSAW CONCERTO

I have probably mentioned this before, as one of the most beautiful and profound songs of the Century, in my estimation.  It is in the style or Rachmaninoff, I think..... yet written for a movie, though it breathes and sings like a classical composition....breath taking beauty in music.

MANTOVANI - GONE WITH THE WIND (TARA'S THEME)

Another memory teaser, the film and the music, will bring you back in time.

MANTOVANI - CARA MIA

Lovely Mattovani, he was also one of our various choices in the long ago...

Brazil by Xavier Cugat & Orch. on 1958 Columbia LP.

Is it me?  I think that the variety of music we listened to was a greater variety than teens do today?  Maybe it has something to do with the radio.   Radio was still big in our lives, if we did not have one in our car, we had a portable battery radio we took everywhere.  What do you think?

Cuban Pete sung by Desi Arnaz

This is the best...to me.  Louis Armstrong did it too, but...this style is the very best for the song...this recording is not the best...but, you get the style, the pace....and...it brings back memories...

Tito Puente - Cuban Pete

this song always makes me think of Desi and Lucy....how wonderful they were!  So today we will compare styles...this version vs Desi, and see what you think

Most important observations

A NEW KIND OF SOCIAL SCIENCE FOR THE  21st CENTURY
A Conversations with Nicholas Christakis
Edge Video (40-Minutes)

"These three things—a biological hurricane, computational social science, and
the rediscovery of experimentation—are going to change the social sciences in
the 21st century. With that change will come, in my judgment, a variety of
discoveries and opportunities that offer tremendous prospect for improving the
human condition.

"It's one thing to say that the way in which we study our object of inquiry,
namely humans, is undergoing profound change, as I think it is. The social
sciences are indeed changing. But the next question is: is the object of inquiry
also undergoing profound change? It's not just how we study it that's changing,
which it is. The question is: is the thing itself, our humanity, also changing?"

NICHOLAS A. CHRISTAKIS is a Physician and Social Scientist, Harvard University;
Coauthor (with James Fowler) of CONNECTED: THE SURPRISING POWER OF OUR SOCIAL
NETWORKS AND HOW THEY SHAPE OUR LIVES

Nicholas Christakis's EDGE Bio Page: http://www.edge.org/memberbio/nicholas_a_christakis

---------------------------------------------------

A NEW KIND OF SOCIAL SCIENCE FOR THE  21st CENTURY

[NICHOLAS CHRISTAKIS] "In the 20th century, there was a tremendous expectation,
or appreciation, for the role that the biological and the physical sciences
could play in improving human welfare and human affairs. We had everything from
the discovery of nuclear power to plastics to, in biology, the discovery of new
drugs, beginning with penicillin (which is one of the gigantic feats of human
ingenuity ever). We had this phenomenal progress that was made in the sciences,
in the physical and the biological sciences.

"In the 21st century, the social sciences offer equal promise for improving
human welfare. The advances that we have made and will be making, especially in
understanding human behavior and its very deep origins, will be translated into
interventions of diverse sorts that will have a much bigger impact in terms of
improving human welfare than many of the prior examples that I gave."

This new frontier in the social sciences is being abetted and even accelerated
by three things that are happening. The first is that a biological hurricane is
approaching the social sciences. Discoveries in biology are calling into
question all kinds of ideas, historically important ideas, in the social
sciences—everything from the origin of free will, to collective expression and
collective behavior, to the deep origins of basic human behaviors. All of these
things are being challenged and elevated by discoveries in biology.

Teddy Bear's Picnic - Val Rosing with Henry Hall & his Orchestra

Do you want to build imagination, creativity, then start with a song like this. Just imagine!

LA PALOMA - NANA MOUSKOURI

Here is an example of a voice that fits a song like a glove, perfect!

Julio Iglesias - Amor, Amor, Amor

A song that is light, lilting and pleasing on all levels, showcasing his voice

Mario Lanza - Parlami d'Amore Mariu

It is not Sunday, but I can hear the music of those long ago Sundays on the radio in our home  in Framingham, Mass., U.S. A.,as Pearl and Guido Oliva conducted the Italian Hour for people of Italian ancestry to enjoy the music of their homeland.  My Mom would sing, as she cooked our favorite Italian, Sunday dinner.  Mom was born in this country, but her parents still struggled with English, so Italian music pleased them and she learned it as a child.  All were proud to be called Americans, and they insisted we learn to speak English only, so we the children could bring the family into the life of our country,  America!  A place where we could be free, and dream the impossible, while reaching for the sky!

FLORES - Vals de las flores - Tchaikovsky

I am so thankful to have grown up in the wonderful era of Disney, fairy tales, and exposure to the wonders of music that came from the fabulous Disney studios.

El Lago de los Cisnes - Chaikovski

In addition to the great fairy tales, Disney introduced us as children to this great classical music playing in the background of his cartoon scenes.  How lucky we were as children to be exposed to the wonders of our inherited fairy tales and music of such beauty.  It fostered imagination, creativity and tremendous joy for me.

A favorite of my husband, who could listen to this over and over, along with over 10 million plus others!

Enya - (2000) A Day Without Rain - 04 Tempus Vernum

Perfect day to think of this
song.  It is raining on the antique coaches in Newport today and tomorrow, but weather was beautiful until today.

THE GOSPEL OF MARY AND MAGDALENIC GNOSIS

The Hellenic approach to the soul.  Maybe the Ancient people knew more than we know today?

The Lost Tomb of Jesus 8/10

, The Mystery continues. It is not for one to make a decision, it is for one to keep an open mind and learn, learn, learn.  If you like mystery, what is wrong with having this be your mystery, right or wrong?

South To A Warmer Place

On Siriusly Sinatra, I heard Frank sing this.  The song is without excitement for me, my husband agreed.  We wondered why he bothered to sing it?  The exercise in voice is not necessarily what the public wants.  What makes an artist sing a song ?  What is the decision making?  In books, it is what is popular , it appeals to a group of self help, etc....In music, what makes artists want to sing this particular song, other than an exercise in voice...?  What do you hear in this presentation that is appealing, I noted below more likes than dislikes.  But, this is important for young artists.  In my estimation this song is not worth the effort, but then what do I know...because the applause is polite.
