R. Buckminster "Bucky" Fuller
Bucky Fuller (July 12, 1895 – July 1, 1983) was an engineer, author, designer, inventor, and futurist. He published more than 30 books, inventing and popularizing terms such as "Spaceship Earth" and synergetics. He is best known for his invention of the geodesic dome. Carbon molecules known as fullerenes were later named by scientists for their resemblance to "Bucky's" geodesic spheres.
New Dimensions had the enormous privilege to sit down with Bucky on many occasions. We've recently digitized several of those programs. Bucky had a way of answering an inquiry in detail. His mind was so encompassing, he never talked in the kind of sound-bytes, which we've been so accustomed to hearing on the media. He takes us on a whirlwind tour of history, as he connects the dots of unfolding humanity. So, enjoy the ride with R. Buckminster Fuller.

A World Lit Only by Fire, William Manchester
This book is a favorite of mine. I recall it frequently and now, it seems most appropriate to read it again. Doesn't this review by Amazon remind you of the times we are now living in? Would you guess that history repeats itself? This week, I saw posts on Facebook by passionate people saying, TAKE MY SIDE! You know that they are not wise in the ways of the world, when they blare out TAKE MY SIDE, they know nothing of what they boldly want to allocate, the waste of government funds, and other maneuvers that swallow up our money, the life blood of our industrious wonderful society, yet here they are pronouncing with passion, "Follow me, I know best!" Hopefully, we will grow more thinkers who will refrain from the positions of lambs following the pied piper. What a wonderful read !

Instead, they waged war in faraway lands, created and lost fortunes, and squandered millions of lives. For all the wastefulness of medieval societies, however, Manchester notes, the era created the foundation for the extraordinary creative explosion of the Renaissance. Drawing on a cast of characters numbering in the hundreds, Manchester does a solid job of reconstructing the medieval world, although some scholars may disagree with his interpretations.

The Black Swan, Nassim Nicholas Taleb
I have been reading this book along with a couple of other books, and was surprised to see the author on Charlie Rose last night, so I followed along. His explanation often went to the most simple, and the easiest to understand. Picture your own household budget, would you spend more money when you were in debt? His argument is that those who have saved and acted responsibily in society , are being forced to pay for those who over extended and acted in a non responsible way. Thus if you were responsible, your bank account is dwindling to pay for the ecessive spending of the people that did not have the money to spend.
He further states that Black Swans are unpredictable, and we need to always be prepared for one to pop up. It is impossible to chart and look back and assume that going forward the same events will take place. Not much different than our mother's and father's told us when they said, "save for a rainy day!"

How could I forget this genius? I had three of his books, I bought in a packet, gathering dust until I finally read them. Once I got started I loved them. I left them for my daughter to find, out in a conspicuous place, and sure enough after a few years, she too found them and delighted in them as I did. You will probably remember this, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,"as one of the best of Roald Dahl's books. It is also a movie so I present the movie, the book and a whole set of Dahl's books. You can not force a child to read, they have to discover the wonder of it, usually through guidance by an adult.
My mother read to me on her knee, I had visions of the stories as she read aloud my favorite books while a 3 year old. It was the Raggedy Ann and Andy series, I wanted to find the candy house, and searched for many years. Mom's ability to make the stories real carried over, they were so believable! It also helped me learn to read before I went to school. Children are ready to learn when they are interested, and excited about what you are trying to convey.
It is not too late to get children interested in reading even in the higher elementary grades, use subjects they like and observe what words they stumble on, to get a clue as to why they are having a problem with reading. Teach them to jump the word and get the meaning of the sentence, so they can guess the word from its letters. Children learn to read in many ways,two ways to try and help, sounding out, guessing from the content of the sentence.
Do not force, push or bribe, make it exciting eve if you have to do the reading.....
Remember, we are not all created equal, some children have a problem reading because they can not see a letter in a word, like in dog, they may not see the o. If you discover this, Mass General has a program that can help, but the basic information is to teach them to jump the word and guess it from the content of the sentence and paragraph. Some "kids" get good at this.

The Black Obelisque Erich Maria Remarque
Remarque was famous for "All Quiet On the Western Front", but this , "The Black Obelisque", was my favorite and if you read the reviews you will see that I am not alone in that.
Hyperinflation after the first world war, and the struggle of the people to endure remains in my mind , probably read by me back in the 50's. It was a book that remained with me with what seemed like forever.
Another favorite book of mine from when I was a young girl is the story of Madame de Stahl, her salon was famous in Paris, and I wondered at her influence as a woman of the time. A book I found in our small library in downtown Framingham. Our librarians were pretty good at picking great books it also shows the value of a library, whether big or small.
Alma Mahler, was married to two genius' of her time, Mahler and Werfel. As a young woman, I was struck that she had been honored to share the lives of such brilliant men. It was an accomplishment not easily done, in her day. I remember picking out the book in the Framingham library, being enthralled with the story of the time, as I was with the magic of our small library in the Framingham Town Hall Building

Love of family, friends, community and country. I loved how Madlyn included music of the times with Meggie's recollection of her intimate experiences. I literally flashed back there again with all its ecstasy and agony. Amazing! I know every one of those songs and it was thrilling to find them online and to connect them to this book. Such a unique concept. She captures the essence of each story in her writing style without extraneous detailing. Concise yet compelling. My first date was at the Totem Pole (which is mentioned in the book.) Madlyn's description brought me back there in an instant. I could see that glittering ball revolving overhead while we danced to a live orchestra (Baron Hugo, I recall) playing "Dream a little Dream of Me" in 1948. She brought me back to the end of World War II. Overwhelming range of emotions were enkindled. In my little community, there was confetti falling like snow, the streets were filled with people crying, laughing.such togetherness. We were all one in spirit. So much love exploding everywhere. Meggie's love of family was expressed so vividly. I was in awe of her spirituality, genuine awareness and acceptance of death. Undoubtedly, you will be astonished as your memory returns to your own experiences while so absorbed in each story just as if you are part of a hologram with the music playing in the background. When you get to know "Meggie", you will feel like you've always known her. You will long to continue a relationship with her. This book inspired me to reconnect to friends I had lost track of through the years and now my life is richer for it. I'm hoping this author writes more books!

Tuck Everlasting and Lost Horizon
A wonderful family story, that my family loved, is "Tuck Everlasting "and a real treat is a story that everyone in the world never forgets once they see it., "Lost Horizon," Both movies are about choices in life.

Women learn to succeed in business without higher education
The book I posted on the last post about women millionaires, is a good way to pump up about how you can be successful without a higher education. I know women who are driven by the need to commit to a goal and to work to achieve the goal. It is not money driven, it is driven by your need to satisfy your life goals.

Business is the furnace that drives the country. Business goes through cycles of expand and contract. Employees in small companies recognize the need to go through the expansion and contraction phase of business. They have the choice of making the best of their job, and doing the work of 2 employees if necessary or leaving and getting another job. Seniority is not standing in front of success or who gets laid off
Government does not expand and contract on response, to business actions,as it should, (for many reasons). If everyone understands this, it gets easier to negotiate and handle future problems.
If more people understood business , we would not be having the fights we have.

I love this version of Layla, the best..Eric Clapton, got me through tough times with this song! Make the best of this situation, that was all I heard when I played this record over and over. Life is not easy, but we can find ways to deal with it. Music was always my escape.

Marketing marvels
Wow, what a job the Kardashian girls are doing , marketing themselves. They have 3 clothing stores, and a number of products that they are bringing to the market. The show and the attention gets them customers. Talk about learning to perservere and face the odds. It is tough to become world famous, but here are three sisters that learned to play the marketing odds. Not everyone wants to pose semi nude, or nude, but even with that they have managed to grab a power hold on the market. ( or maybe because of that)

Leaning to listen, think and respond, not talk at, and keep it going!
Interesting events this week. I happened to stop surfing on Hannity as he was interviewing Rumsfeld. I stopped long enough to be impressed with the erudite
man, Donald Rumsfeld, who was speaking and answering questions. I heard him say that Colin Powell provided the information that led people to believe that there were WMD. I also heard him say that wonderful Condoleeza Rice, as an academic does, took time to ponder and look at all angles. to make the right decisions, and this is not always best for situations that need quick action. (If you are a business person, you know that sometimes you have no choice except to take the best action possible, because a swift decision has to be made).
The next night, I heard Chris Matthews, on Hard Ball discuss the same book from a whole different point of view than the author in his own voice was trying to convey.
Chris totally blamed Rumsfeld for the problems that were discussed by him in his book and Matthews further said that Condoleeza Rice and Colin Powell should be going after Rumsfeld.
So, we have an author with a point of view based on his experience. Then we have a non involved person reading the authors book and completely disagreeing with the author, althought the people involved have not denied the authors observations..( yet)
This is an example of why we have serious communication problems between the two political parties.
One person sets forth his views, and the next person responds, both are trying to win, from their point of view. While we speak at each other in this manner, we are not listening , but each attempting to win a war of points of view.
We need to listen , learn more and respond with good intentions., to reach accord. Maybe if we came at our news shows with a better intent instead of a hardened point of view, it would help change the attitude that is prevalent. I hope we are not going to go through another Presidential election that points fingers, lets move on with absolute positive plans that indicate the road ahead and where we need to slow down, stop, change course, etc. but get somewhere at a certain time. One thing you have to say for O'Reilly on The Factor,
he does try and keep an open mind, and listen to the other side, you may not all agree, but just compare him to Keith Olbermann, and it will be very clear, what I am talking about. We must give credit to those that are trying hard to change the attitude, to reach for good intent.

A song that conveys the spirit of our country, I once believed in as a child. I love this song, it is uplifting and helps to get you going!
When I played this , this morning, all of a sudden memories flooded me, I remembered my uncles being drafted at the onset of the Second World War, and I cried, just as Meggie did in my book, Secrets of the Heart, when the war came. One thing we had then, we were united in spirit, we knew we were fighting for something worthwhile. Our hearts were in our throats, as our men went to war, but, what a country we lived in then, everyone pitched in, personal, and group sacrifice. War clouds hung over us, but when the going got tough, the tough got going.!

If you know and follow Ayn Rand, even if you don't agree with her, you could enlighten yourself to Rudolf Steiner, who was first to promote the individual, as most important to society.
To me it is critical as we head to a society that wants to make everyone equal, ( impossible to do, by the way) at the cost of individuality. Remember the cowboy and Indian movies we all loved when we were young and still love ...I know many look for the Western movies on T.V. Why? We all love the individual hero who steps up to the plate!
The individual is born free, with certain unalienable rights to make decisions and create. Through the creations of individuals we came to form states and societies that have moral value. It is then up to us to live up to those moral values, within our ethical individualism. Many of our problems come from societal groups, not from particular individuals, and realization of this is a way to begin to solve problems.
Unfortunately, we are being overcome by those who view societal equality more important than individual rights. One has to come to the view of ethical individualism to understand that we will be a better society if we allow people to be free to create. After all, freedom ,at the birth of our nation made us the greatest country in the world. We are losing that lead, as we constrain ourselves with legislation, laws, bills, and all kinds of regulatory practices, that discourage business, and the ability to take our creations to the market, as people did in the 1950's and earlier.
You can not even get a fair trial in many of our states, it is incomprehensible, that you can sign a contract, and have it ignored by a judge, or not sign any contract, and have the judge ignore the fact that you do not have a contract, orally or in writing. There are some court cases going on for as much as 20 years, with an argument that has no basis in any contract. Can you imagine that? Just see the case that keeps popping up on Facebook as one example, of what one small business man can be up against.

The Nature of Technology
Today there was an article in the Huffington Post, by an author who was wishing to slow down technology. It reminded me of a book I was reading about the nature of technology. I think that the person who wrote the article of course, wrote it from a selfish point of view. As he states, anyone that buys a new phone or other technical item, does not want to see the item updated within months, however, the pace of technology is that fast, I believe it is about 8-9 months.
The nature of technology is interesting, because it affects our history , our culture, our future and predictions of our future. As a consumer, you have to think, do I need this now, or should I wait 8-9 months for a better version. Remember the new innovations can help our economy climb out of this recession!
Right now the i-pad war is on, with new "i-pads" slated to begin hitting the market from other companies to compete with the Apple i-pad. The Playpad, will tie your cell phone by blue tooth, so you do not need to have a modem assigned to the cell phone and the playpad, you will be able to have one modem. This is a big improvement, and then, what I am waiting for ,is to take my Direct tv with me, rather than have a separate system in each location, such as a cottage at the beach and your main home, etc. The dreams are coming true, all the time. In studies of consciousness, we form our own worlds, could this be the hard proof?

We have some complex problems to solve and directions to give to our elected officials, This is
an interesting book that attempts to cover a broad complex subject. I am particularly interested in his thoughts concerning,the fact that running a major war requires the need to raise debt. Debt in turn contributes to deficit spending, driving the underlying rate of inflation that steadily saps the puchasing power of the dollar.
Am I wrong in thinking this is true?
Anytime there is a war with the United States, the defeated country, gets all kinds of rebuilding at our cost. Look at the devastated cities in Europe and Japan, and how we rebuilt them after the war. Look at what is happening in Iraq. We are nation builders for all, but ourselves. Why? Why are our cities neglected? Our Army can go and protect the citizens of the countries in the middle east, but only our National Guard can protect us on the borders? I have lots of questions, and maybe not all the right answers, what about you?
It appears that we do not put our nation first. Am I wrong in this thinking, is this push still necessary in the Middle East, at the cost of prosperity to our nation?

Take Gunga Din, a rollicking song
lilting, lilting, you along.

The Illusion of Free Markets
I see comments from so many young people about how to vote, these people can not possibly understand the market, where do they get the information that makes them so positive about what to do, how to vote..??? Guess where it comes from. Here is a book that begins to explain the convoluted rules, regulations, and complications of markets.
Even adults, who are not business oriented, or who have no idea of the regulations and problems of a business....and those that have little knowledge of what happens in an economy or what happens to a business, as a result of over regulation, unfair regulation etc., etc., need help, including me. I would like to suggest that if anyone is really interested in taking sides, on how to approach and solve the problems of the free market, and our economy that they read a book like this. There are so many hidden variables, like planning boards who have no idea of how to plan, tax authorities who up taxes on your property when the values go down, ( maybe you understand that one)
and governments that do not lay off in the departments where the volume has diminished, because they are friends with the employees, etc....and of course remember your friend Joe, he is retiring in 3 years, so you need to raise his rank or position so he retires at the highest salary....it goes on and on....
Teachers who are unionized and working with the union mantra, spreading it to our children, yep, that is where they understand how to vote at 16 years old.....!!!!( thanks to which President, bet you do not know which President paid the unions back by letting them unionize the government, teachers, transportation ,etc...)
Is it a free country, when the teachers are unionized, how can it be?
If you have any idea of how the Mafia operated , think about it, and think about what a legalized Mafia would be doing, acting like, etc. Right now the sitting President, as one of his first actions, removed the legislation in March aprox 9 weeks in office, that required the Unions to report their income and expenses, as all non profits are suppose to do....Why would he have done that?
Continue to be hoodwinked....or really think about it, and learn. It is complicated, but there are some simple things you can think about. Should convicts vote? Should people who do not pay taxes vote? Think about it, what is fair? Would you pay someone who lived next door because they voted for you to pay them ? It is simple, but.....complicated, my own idea is to reduce all questions to a personal level. It is easier to come to conclusions.
Welfare as we know it has to change. People will object, but it is not set up to nurture the children. Just watch Lock Up on Tv and you will see and hear the results of our welfare system. Prisoners are multiplying too fast. I have thoughts on how to improve our system, maybe you do too!

Google Tablet Computer Running Chrome OS Coming in November: Exciting news, or plain rumor? According to several sources, Google is set to release a tablet computer that will run Chrome OS, an open-source, Linux-based operating system that focuses on running web applications. The device is being manufactured by HTC Corporation, the same company that built the Nexus One. The Google tablet computer is said to be released on November 26, 2010 (Black Friday), and it be will be under Verizon contract.
It is worth noting that Google posted some prototype images of a tablet computer running Chrome OS (see below). I'm guessing the design of the Google tablet will closely resemble that of the prototype that they were showing.
As for the hardware specifications, the rumored Google tablet PC will have a multi-touch display capable of 1280 x 720 resolution. It will offer a minimum of 32GB SSD storage, which may be expandable using a multi-card reader. The device is expected to be powered by a Tegra 2 processor that has dual ARM Cortex-A9 cores clocked to 1GHz, and it will be loaded with 2GB of RAM. That is some powerful specs I should say.
Some of the other possible features of Chrome OS tablet computer include WiFi, Bluetooth, LTE, GPS, and webcam. A mini-DVI or if possible an HDMI port would be a nice addition.
The Google tablet computer could easily beat the Apple iPad in terms of overall features and may come at an affordable price. So I'm definitely getting it once available instead of the overpriced and locked down iPad.
