"You'll Never Know" (Vera Lynn, 1943)
The sound of the 1940's is so evident in this sound of what I heard on the radio in the 1940's! ...Imagine the radio ...first a small table model and then a floor model, our only vocal contact with the outside world, except for the telephone. Did you know that in the 1940's we still used a means of communication known through the world, maybe since the beginning of man? That was sound. The other day as I read about the Gauls, in a book called, The Middle Earth, I learned of their communication thru the sound of voices, ulating and yodeling, first the voice, and of course we know of the drums, then assistance to the voice, and then.assistance to the drums...which became .the fire alarm. The fire alarm was our community announcement of fire! It was also an announcement of something important for us to know immediately such as the announcement of an air raid, and finally...and most beautifully the end of the war! History is truly interesting.
