Small Town America Framingham Thru My Eyes: The War Years and Beyond: Madlyn A Fafard: 9781466201026: Amazon.com: Books
My plan in writing this book, was to paint a broad stroke picture of the time. Heavy immigration brought thousands to our shores at the turn of the Century, just before the 1st World War. We were influenced by the times that came before us and by the desire of immigrants to make a better life for their children. When the 2nd World War came bearing down, we became a land of heroes. I don't know about you, but I thought we lived in a land of HEROES!
I believe that those of us who lived the period of time that enveloped the world in war, always have tears inside when the war is recalled. Yes, look carefully at the faces , at the eyes of those remaining people of the time , you will see, when the war is recalled, the pain hidden just under the surface.
Virtual reality was our constant companion as we shouted terms we heard on the radio..."Yamamoto!
Axis Sally! Hari Kari! We played make believe war games on our side streets and fields off Hollis Street in Framingham, Mass., a small town at the time, maybe like the small town you grew up in.
At night tears followed us to bed, in our roller shade bedrooms with flowered wallpaper and lace curtains, as the songs of the time drifted down the hall and under our bedroom doors, while air raid practice caused all the lights to go out. A song of tears for me, When the Lights Go On Again All Over the World, was like a prayer!
